"Nuggets"

We are calling this page "Nuggets" simply because it contains bits and pieces of passages that we have found interesting, fascinating and/or curious. And, we have taken the liberty to give some commentary and provide our own interpretation when we feel that traditional interpretations are not in line with the acutal text or the sense of the text.

Moreover, this page is a work in process, and may change from time to time.

It is our hope that you find some interesting "nuggets" within this page as well.

Please note that the English translation (within column showing Hebrew on the left and English on the right) has been taken from Jewish Publication Society version from 1917 (not modern version). Also note that we have attempted to put enough scriptural references within the body of each "nugget" to establish proper context for the point or thought that we are trying to capture.

Sections are separtated with double lines

Treating יְהֹוָה  [YehoVah] Falsely

Exodus 20:6

לֹא תִשָּׂא אֶת־שֵׁם־יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לַשָּׁוְא

Thou shalt NOT treat the Name of יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ  [YehoVah your G-d]
לַשָּׁוְא  FALSELY, as if He doesn't even exist!

page 643 (left column) Ernest Klein's
A Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary of the Hebrew Language For Readers of English

Often rendered in English translations as thou shalt not take the name of the L-RD thy God in vain, the third commandment is often understood merely as not using the Name as a swear word.

Although that is certainly not a good thing to do, we feel that over-simplification of meaning of the text renders it benign in most instances, especially living in an age where speaking obscenely is practically considered normal speech in modern culture.

It is our contention that the meaning of the Hebrew is much different and actually takes on a greater role within the scope of the 10 Commandments. In fact, we feel it should prabably be translated something along the lines of the following:

Thou shalt NOT treat the Name
of יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ  [YehoVah your G-d]
לַשָּׁוְא  FALSELY (as if He doesn't even exist)!

How do we justify that, you may ask?

Here's how:

The Ten Commandments appear twice in the Torah, first in Exodus 20 and second time in Deuteronomy 5. In both cases, they are rendered almost verbatim (word-for-word) except in the passages translated "...Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." (Ex. 20:12, Deut. 5:17).

In each case where the third commandment is written, it is exactly the same in Exodus 20:6 and Deuteronomy 5:10.

In the case of the commandment not to bear false witness against thy neighbor, in the first case in Exodus 20:12 the word שָׁקֶר [ShaQer] is used, whereas in the Deuteronomy 5:17 passage the same word as used in the third commandment שָּׁוְא [Shav] is used.

Why do we see this as significant?

See the following screen capture for the definition of the word שָׁקֶר [ShaQer]:

page 680 (left column) Ernest Klein's
A Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary of the Hebrew Language For Readers of English

שָׁקֶר [ShaQer] is the word used to express False Witness in the passage in Exodus and carries a meaning closer to FALSE with no possibility of a meaning as IN VAIN mostly translated for the third commandment, with the word, שָּׁוְא [Shav]!

We see this as important since we believe that Moses wrote the Torah (the first five books of the Hebrew Scriptures, aka Tanakh)!

It is apparent that Moses used the words, שָּׁוְא [Shav] and שָׁקֶר [ShaQer] interchangeably by these two passages, and therefore we consider that in all four cases herein where the word שָּׁוְא [Shav] is used it takes on a meaning closer to that of שָׁקֶר [ShaQer], even though שָׁקֶר [ShaQer] is used only once.

It is important to note from our first screen grab form Klein's Dictionary, the word שָּׁוְא [Shav] does have a definition beginning as falsehood (note that "vanity" is a lesser sense used), so our understanding is clearly within the bounds of that definition.

No one would ever berate us for saying so for the Exodus passage because it is silly to think of the passage rendered in the sense of "Bearing False Witness" as having a meaning of "Treating a Neighbor in vain". Rather, we believe it certainly makes more sense in all four cases that they take on the meaning of "FALSE, FALSEHOOD".

Here are the passages from Exodus and then Deuteronomy:

Exodus 20:6, 12

לַשָּׁוְא ... שָׁקֶר

"False ... False"

לֹא תִשָּׂא אֶת־שֵׁם־יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לַשָּׁוְא כִּי לֹא יְנַקֶּה יְהוָה אֵת אֲשֶׁר־יִשָּׂא אֶת־שְׁמוֹ לַשָּׁוְא׃ פ

לַעֲשׂוֹת הַפֶּסַח בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי

(Hezekiah prayed for unclean who observed Pesach (2nd month))

וַיִּשְׁלַח יְחִזְקִיָּהוּ עַל־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהוּדָה וְגַם־אִגְּרוֹת כָּתַב עַל־אֶפְרַיִם וּמְנַשֶּׁה לָבוֹא לְבֵית־יְהוָה בִּירוּשָׁלָםִ לַעֲשׂוֹת פֶּסַח לַיהוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

ב

2

For the king had taken counsel, and his princes, and all the congregation in Jerusalem, to keep the passover in the second month.

ג

3

For they could not keep it at that time, because the priests had not sanctified themselves in sufficient number, neither had the people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem.

וַיִּישַׁר הַדָּבָר בְּעֵינֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ וּבְעֵינֵי כָּל־הַקָּהָל׃

ד

4

And the thing was right in the eyes of the king and of all the congregation.

Ezekiel 28:1-10

Pride of Tyre

וַיְהִי דְבַר־יְהוָה אֵלַי לֵאמֹר׃

א

1

And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying:

ב

2

'Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyre: Thus saith the Lord GOD: because thy heart is lifted up, and thou hast said: I am a god, I sit in the seat of God, in the heart of the seas; yet thou art man, and not God, though thou didst set thy heart as the heart of God--

הִנֵּה חָכָם אַתָּה מִדָּנִאֵל כָּל־סָתוּם לֹא עֲמָמוּךָ׃

ג

3

Behold, thou art wiser than Daniel! there is no secret that they can hide from thee!

בְּחָכְמָתְךָ וּבִתְבוּנָתְךָ עָשִׂיתָ לְּךָ חָיִל וַתַּעַשׂ זָהָב וָכֶסֶף בְּאוֹצְרוֹתֶיךָ׃

ד

4

By thy wisdom and by thy discernment thou hast gotten thee riches, and hast gotten gold and silver into thy treasures;

ה

5

n thy great wisdom by thy traffic hast thou increased thy riches, and thy heart is lifted up because of thy riches-- {S}

לָכֵן כֹּה אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה יַעַן תִּתְּךָ אֶת־לְבָבְךָ כְּלֵב אֱלֹהִים׃

ו

6

Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: because thou hast set thy heart as the heart of God;

לָכֵן הִנְנִי מֵבִיא עָלֶיךָ זָרִים עָרִיצֵי גּוֹיִם וְהֵרִיקוּ חַרְבוֹתָם עַל־יְפִי חָכְמָתֶךָ וְחִלְּלוּ יִפְעָתֶךָ׃

ז

7

Therefore, behold, I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations; and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall defile thy brightness.

לַשַּׁחַת יוֹרִדוּךָ וָמַתָּה מְמוֹתֵי חָלָל בְּלֵב יַמִּים׃

ח

8

They shall bring thee down to the pit; and thou shalt die the deaths of them that are slain, in the heart of the seas.

הֶאָמֹר תֹּאמַר אֱלֹהִים אָנִי לִפְנֵי הֹרְגֶךָ וְאַתָּה אָדָם וְלֹא־אֵל בְּיַד מְחַלְלֶיךָ׃

ט

9

Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee: I am God? But thou art man, and not God, in the hand of them that defile thee.

מוֹתֵי עֲרֵלִים תָּמוּת בְּיַד־זָרִים כִּי אֲנִי דִבַּרְתִּי נְאֻם אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה׃ ס

Thou shalt die the deaths of the uncircumcised by the hand of strangers; for I have spoken, saith the Lord GOD.' {P}

10

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they shall look unto Me because they have thrust him through; and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first-born.

בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא יִגְדַּל הַמִּסְפֵּד בִּירוּשָׁלַםִ כְּמִסְפַּד הֲדַדְ־רִמּוֹן בְּבִקְעַת מְגִדּוֹן׃

יא

11

In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon.

וְסָפְדָה הָאָרֶץ מִשְׁפָּחוֹת מִשְׁפָּחוֹת לְבָד מִשְׁפַּחַת בֵּית־דָּוִיד לְבָד וּנְשֵׁיהֶם לְבָד מִשְׁפַּחַת בֵּית־נָתָן לְבָד וּנְשֵׁיהֶם לְבָד׃

יב

12

And the land shall mourn, every family apart: the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart;

מִשְׁפַּחַת בֵּית־לֵוִי לְבָד וּנְשֵׁיהֶם לְבָד מִשְׁפַּחַת הַשִּׁמְעִי לְבָד וּנְשֵׁיהֶם לְבָד׃

The family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of the Shimeites apart, and their wives apart;

All the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart.

Hebrew Matthew—Matthew 13:23

Henry Morse Says Caleb a "Certifiable Gentile!"

Numbers 34:19 Caleb tribe of Yehuda (as opposed to Henry Morse, "The Lord chose ... who", p19, quoting Genesis 15:18-21 [ he says,

"Very few people know this, but Caleb was a certifiable Gentile. You might ask: How is this possible? The Scripture tells us he was the son of Jephuna the Kenezzite. The Kenezzites were to be dispossessed from Canaan, the land that the children of Israel were promised by the Lord in Genesis 15:18:21:

In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying "Unto thy seed have I geven this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaim, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebudsites."

We see these two men entering the Promised Land together as an example of Jewish-Gentile relationships, according to the heart fo the Lord. This Jew and Gentile entered into the land together, a generation after the Exodus, foreshadowing the one new man, Jew and Gentile, restored back to his Creator, as we read about in Ephesians 2. (Joshua 14:6 tells us who this "one new man" is , as well as Numbers 14:24, 13:6, 26:65, and 34:19)"

Numbers Chapter 34:19

וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת הָאֲנָשִׁים לְמַטֵּה יְהוּדָה כָּלֵב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּה׃

יט

19

And these are the names of the men: of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

In The Book Of Judges
We are told that Caleb's younger brother Othniel
Was the son of Kenaz!:

Judges 1:12-13

וַיֹּאמֶר כָּלֵב אֲשֶׁר־יַכֶּה אֶת־קִרְיַת־סֵפֶר וּלְכָדָהּ וְנָתַתִּי לוֹ אֶת־עַכְסָה בִתִּי לְאִשָּׁה׃

יב

12

And Caleb said: 'He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.'

וַיִּלְכְּדָהּ עָתְנִיאֵל בֶּן־קְנַז אֲחִי כָלֵב הַקָּטֹן מִמֶּנּוּ וַיִּתֶּן־לוֹ אֶת־עַכְסָה בִתּוֹ לְאִשָּׁה ׃

יג

13

And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

Judges 3:9-12

וַיִּזְעֲקוּ בְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל־יְהוָה וַיָּקֶם יְהוָה מוֹשִׁיעַ לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיּוֹשִׁיעֵם אֵת עָתְנִיאֵל בֶּן־קְנַז אֲחִי כָלֵב הַקָּטֹן מִמֶּנּוּ׃

ט

9

And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

וַתְּהִי עָלָיו רוּחַ־יְהוָה וַיִּשְׁפֹּט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיֵּצֵא לַמִּלְחָמָה וַיִּתֵּן יְהוָה בְּיָדוֹ אֶת־כּוּשַׁן רִשְׁעָתַיִם מֶלֶךְ אֲרָם וַתָּעָז יָדוֹ עַל כּוּשַׁן רִשְׁעָתָיִם׃

י

10

And the spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Cushan–rishathaim.

וַתִּשְׁקֹט הָאָרֶץ אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה וַיָּמָת עָתְנִיאֵל בֶּן־קְנַז׃ פ

יא

11

And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

וַיֹּסִפוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לַעֲשׂוֹת הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה וַיְחַזֵּק יְהוָה אֶת־עֶגְלוֹן מֶלֶךְ־מוֹאָב עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל עַל כִּי־עָשׂוּ אֶת־הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה׃

יב

12

And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.

Verse 11 says, "And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died."

Now, if Kenaz was the father of Othniel, and by extension his older brother Caleb, it goes without saying that they were Kenazzites! That may be near the spelling of the Genesis passage, but Genesis is speaking of another group, not of the tribe of Judah (which came later).
